In today’s increasingly globalized world, more and more people are choosing to live, work and study abroad — and this trend appears to be a good thing.

Social science studies have shown that international experiences can enhance creativity, reduce intergroup bias, and promote career success.

Researchers set out to examine whether and how international experiences can transform a person’s sense of self.

The Mundanity of Excellence

Daniel F. Chambliss studied swimmers of all levels for several years to determine the causes of "excellence."

He found that excellence is not the result of personality traits or quantitative changes in behavior, but rather requires qualitative differentiation. "Talent" or "natural ability" is a myth that mystifies the actual factors creating superlative performances. Superlative performance is a synthesis of small skills drilled into a habit.

The pursuit of excellence requires maintaining mundanity.

The article provides tips on how to actively listen to someone you don't agree with. The author emphasizes the importance of non-verbal attending, which involves giving someone your full attention without speaking, maintaining moderate eye contact, and staying silent.

Reflecting and asking open-ended questions are also key skills in active listening. The article reminds readers that these tools are intended to promote understanding and connection, and should not be forced if they are not working in a particular situation.

Book Notes #92: Antifragile by Nassim Nicholas Taleb

Source:  Book Notes of the Week

Antifragile by Nassim Nicholas Taleb is a groundbreaking exploration of how individuals, systems, and societies can thrive in the face of chaos and uncertainty.

It introduces the concept of antifragility, contrasting it with fragility and robustness. Taleb discusses the impact of rare and unpredictable events (Black Swans), the importance of "skin in the game" for decision-makers, and the barbell strategy of risk management.

This book challenges conventional wisdom, offering a new perspective on risk, resilience, and success, making it a must-read for those seeking to navigate our unpredictable world and emerge stronger from adversity.
